The State Competence Centre for Infectious Epidemiology, or LKZ for short, is the central authority in the state of Bremen where all information on notifiable infectious diseases and pathogens in the state of Bremen is collated and analysed.
Infectious disease epidemiology is a branch of epidemiology that deals with the investigation and surveillance of communicable diseases. It examines how infectious diseases spread, which pathogens are responsible for them and how they are transmitted.
We collect all information on notifiable infectious diseases and pathogens in the state of Bremen. The LKZ is the link between the health authorities in Bremen and Bremerhaven and the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), a federal authority. The Senator for Health, Women and Consumer Protection is responsible for supervising the LKZ.
The health authorities in Bremen and Bremerhaven collect the reported data on infectious diseases and pathogens. The data is anonymised, i.e. without names, and forwarded to the LKZ. We then forward the data to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). We also monitor and evaluate the reported infectious diseases and pathogens in the state of Bremen. Our goal is to identify and stop chains of infection in order to protect the people of the state of Bremen from infectious diseases.
Our work is based on the Infection Protection Act (IfSG) and the decree of the Senator for Health, Women and Consumer Protection. According to the provisions of Sections 6 and 7 of the IfSG, doctors and laboratories are obliged to report certain infectious diseases and pathogens to the health authorities in the state of Bremen. These reports form the database for the work of the LKZ.
