FAQ Domestic water filters

How to protect your drinking water quality

A domestic water filter is part of the drinking water installation and is installed behind the water meter. Sometimes residents are unaware that such a filter is present and that regular maintenance and service of the filter is necessary.

The domestic water filter is designed to filter small particles such as rust or sand out of the drinking water. These particles can damage pipes or interfere with appliances such as taps and washing machines. The filter therefore protects your pipes and appliances from damage.

  • Mandatory: If your water pipes are made of metal (e.g. copper), the filter must been installed behind the water meter. This is regulated by DIN 1988.
  • Recommended: A filter is recommended for plastic pipes in accordance with DIN.
  • Older installations: Older drinking water installations often do not have a filter. Installation was not mandatory in the past. In these cases, there is no obligation to retrofit a filter.

Particles accumulate in the filter and, over time, germs too. This can impair the quality of the drinking water. The filter must therefore been purged or replaced regularly, depending on the type. A clean filter ensures that the water remains pure and the pipes are not damaged.

  • Backwashing filters: Purge the filter every two months. Instructions on how to do this are in the operating instructions.
  • Non-backwashable filters: Check these every two months as well. If the inserts are dirty, replace them. They should been replaced at least every 6 months for hygiene reasons.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to maintain the filter correctly.
