Electromagnetic fields

In order to protect us from health risks posed by electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in technical systems and devices, Germany has established limit values. These limit values must be observed when, for example, new high-voltage power lines or mobile phone base stations are built. Products such as smartphones must also comply with certain EMF requirements. A great deal of research has been conducted into the possible health risks of EMFs. Our limits are considered safe. Nevertheless, health risks cannot be ruled out even below the limits. This is especially true for possible long-term effects. We therefore recommend keeping EMF as low as possible, especially for children.

What are EMF?

We are surrounded by various electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields. These are also referred to as EMF for short. Some of them occur naturally, such as sunlight or the Earth's magnetic field, while others are generated by humans. Some of them have very different properties and arise, for example, as a by-product of power lines. For mobile communications, Wi-Fi (local wireless network) or Bluetooth, they are generated specifically to transmit information.

What do we do?

  • We advise citizens on the health risks of EMFs and provide recommendations on how everyone can reduce EMFs in their environment.
  • We are involved in new planning for electricity grid, railway and mobile phone operators, as well as in urban land-use planning.
  • We work closely with other authorities and also advise on the use of WLAN (local wireless network) in schools and daycare centres, for example.
