Measures to prevent rats

You can prevent rat infestations with these simple measures:

Rat control on private property

This should be carried out by a professional pest controller. You can find addresses in the Yellow Pages or on the Internet. Pest controllers also look for the causes of the rat infestation.

Structural defects

Make sure there are no holes or cracks in walls through which rats can enter the building.

Store yellow bags

Food scraps attract rats. Store yellow bags in closed rooms or hang them on hooks.

Organic waste bins and composters

Rats can gnaw through the bottom of organic waste bins or composters. Check regularly for holes or gnaw marks.

Compost heaps

Do not throw cooked food scraps or non-plant waste on the compost heap. This attracts rats.

Ground cover

Cut back ground cover regularly so that rats cannot find shelter there.

Private animal husbandry

After feeding animals such as chickens, remove all food scraps so that rats do not settle under the stables.

Feeding animals outdoors

Do not feed ducks or pigeons, as leftover food attracts rats.

Sewerage

Do not throw food scraps into the toilet. This encourages the proliferation of rats. Use non-return valves in the drain.
