Vaccinations, travel medicine and tropical medicine

We support you in protecting your health while travelling. Our goal is to inform about health risks in your destination country and to check and complete your vaccination status. We will discuss the recommended travel vaccines and standard vaccinations with you and carry out most of them on request. We are the only certified yellow fever vaccination centre in Bremen. If you fall ill after returning from your trip, your doctor can refer you to our tropical medicine consultation for further examination and treatment of tropical diseases. We are also responsible implement and carry out [LINK;school vaccination] programme in Bremen.

  • Diseases transmitted by insects (malaria, dengue, Zika, TBE) and insect protection
  • Diarrhoeal diseases and preventive measures
  • Weltwärts: Pre- and post-travel tropical medicine check-ups
  • Tropical medicine consultation for ill patients returning from abroad (travellers) and people with previouslong-term stays in tropical countries

Tropical medicine consultation

The tropical medicine consultation is intended for travellers returning from the tropics or subtropics who develop symptoms of illness after their trip. People with suspected tropical diseases after previous long-term stays in these countries are welcome as well. You need a referral (Überweisungsschein) from your family doctor to the tropical medicine consultation for the consultation.
In the consultation tropical diseases are evaluated, diagnosed and treated. This often includes physical examinations, blood tests, laboratory diagnostic tests of urine and stool, and sometimes ultrasound examinations or referral to other diagnostics like radiology.

  • Medication schedule
  • All vaccination certificates
  • Health insurance card

Malaria information
If you have a fever (≥ 38°C) and are returning from an area with malaria, you must undergo malaria testing immediately, especially within the first 4 months after your return. Malaria can be life-threatening within a few days. If immediate outpatient testing is not available (e.g. on Friday evening), please visit directly the next emergency room.

Important information and documents for your travel medicine consultation appointment

  • Health questionnaire: Please bring the completed questionnaire with you or fill it out 15 minutes before your appointment (separately for each person).

  • Information on yellow fever vaccination: If yellow fever vaccination is recommended for your destination, please fill out the information form and bring it with you.

  • Vaccination certificates:Bring all your vaccination certificates with you.
  • Early arrival: If you have completed the health questionnaire and the information sheet on yellow fever vaccination, please come directly to your appointment.
    All other patients are requested to arrive 15 minutes early to complete the paperwork.
  • Cost coverage: Many health insurance companies reimburse a large portion of the costs for travel vaccinations. Please contact your health insurance company before your appointment to clarify which costs will be covered.

  • Payment: To pay for the vaccinations and counselling services directly at our premises, please bring your EC card (Girocard or debit card from your bank) with you. If you do not have an EC card, you can also pay by credit card.
